DOE-2.1E vs. DOE-2.2 vs. PowerDOE 2. PowerDOE - how to obtain beta software and documentation free! 1. DOE-2.1E vs. DOE-2.2 vs. PowerDOE DOE-2.1E and DOE-2.2 are "batch" oriented programs for which you create input files with the building description. The learning curve on these programs is 6-12 months, and difficult unless you take at least one training course and have much time to "practice". DOE-2.2 is much changed and upgraded from 2.1E, most of the extensive changes are in the HVAC area - particularly in the central plant descriptions. If you know DOE-2.1E will you need to covert to DOE-2.2, probably by the end of the year since we will discontinue bug fixing and support on 2.1E after DOE-2.2 is released within the next 1-2 months. The 2.1E -> 2.2 conversion will not take long as all the concepts of 2.1E are similar to 2.2, but 2.2 has many new capabilities. We have resellers that market interfaces for DOE-2.1E, but they are all limited. If you do not know DOE-2 at all and need to begin today you should either consider starting with PowerDOE or visiting the web site of those who offer 2.1E product with user interfaces. One example is VisualDOE from Eley Associates at www.eley.com or 415 957-1977. I only recommend these products for new DOE-2 users as you may find that you quickly outgrow their flexibility. They do, however, allow you to get started very quickly. DOE-2.2 is still in pre-release. You can get a test version from us, at no charge, if you are a licensed user of our 2.1E product. The documentation is in very rough shape at this time but we expect it to bee in very good shape later this year. We supply the test version, at this time, only with our draft developer internal documents (sometimes a bit out-of-date and incomplete). PowerDOE is a complete DOE-2.2 based simulation environment. It is very graphical in its presentation of both the building description and the display of results. It is very flexible and is a super-set of DOE-2 capabilities, NOT a subset like other products; it has input, output, weather processing, libraries, and other functions integrated into a single windows users interface. It includes 2-D and 3-D display of your building, graphical display of HVAC equipment layout, and access to all DOE-2.2 input parameters and summary/hourly report data. PowerDOE is an interactive simulation environment, not an interface that produces DOE-2 BDL files and runs batch DOE-2 BDL/SIM in the background. PowerDOE stores is building description in BDL language for portability and compatibility with non-windows implementations of DOE-2.2. PowerDOE has all documentation online - like new DOE-2 documentation there are some errors or missing items that will be corrected over time. PowerDOE, like DOE-2, is complex so training is also advised, but it can be picked up very quickly; usually a couple of days for someone familiar with any energy modeling program. A PowerDOE "Quick Start Guide" and "Tutorial" are available on the web FTP site (PD_Intro.exe - see below) free in PDF format. Of course, being new software, we expect bugs but we will resolves them as quickly as possible. PowerDOE is just getting started; we have many capabilities under development as well as improvement to the user interface to improve easy-of-use. 2. PowerDOE As mentioned above, PowerDOE is a new, very powerful, building energy analysis product. PowerDOE is in final stages of beta testing; we expect a commercial release soon. A PowerDOE 90-day "evaluation" license agreement is available; it is good for the current beta or any version for up to 90-days after you are issued a registration number. Best to get registration number prior to downloading the program by returning the completed license. Any individual or organization can obtain a 90-day evaluation PowerDOE registration, free of charge, once per year or major product release (i.e. PowerDOE 1, PowerDOE 2, etc.). If you already have gotten such a 90-day registration number from us please do not submit a request for another! To get a registration number you must fill out, sign, and return an original of the proper license (US or non-US versions) to Jeff Hirsch at the following address: James J. Hirsch & Associates Attn.: Jeff Hirsch 12185 Presilla Road Camarillo, CA 93012-9243 USA You will receive a registration number by email. We MUST have the original signed three page license even if you fax a copy as well. If you cannot download the program we can make a CD for time and materials charge (see below); include check payable to James J. Hirsch with license. There are two versions of the license agreement in PDF format on the DOE2/PowerDOE FTP web site. To read and print the license files you will need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader(TM). If you don't have a current copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader (i.e., version 3.01), you can download it for free at: http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/download.html The DOE-2/PowerDOE web download site is located through your browser at: ftp://doe2.com/PowerDOE At this site download the appropriate licenses version as follows: PD90US.pdf United States User Version PD90Int.pdf International User Version To download a file from the web FTP site you can simply click on the file name on the page. You will get a dialog asking if you wish to open or save it to disk; best to save it to disk then, within the explorer (Win95 or NT 4.0) simply double click on it to open using the Acrobat (in Win 3.1 or NT 3.51, start the Acrobat and then open the file). Print off a copy of the license agreement, fill out the bottom of the last page and return the entire agreement to the above address. You must supply an email address where we can email you a registration number or enclose $US55 ($US60 for Canada, $US65 South America and elsewhere in world) to have a CD sent by mail (for Visa or Mastercard orders the retail price is $5 higher than this cash/check discount.) To download the program go to the web site and download the files: PD_v118g.exe (PowerDOE version 1.18g dated May 2000) 118uDOE2.zip (PowerDOE's update) (Note: if 118uDOE2.zip is not present then you don't need it) Then unzip the pd archive into a temporary directory and execute the setup.exe program; when it is complete you can delete the setup program and other components extracted from the archive. After the install is complete unzip the DOE-2.2 update archive and replace the doe-2 doebdl.dll (and/or doesim.dll) in the PowerDOE directory with those from the update archive. When you start PowerDOE the first time it will request a registration number; type in (or cut and paste from the email notification we sent to you) the registration number you have been assigned. You can obtain TMY2, TMY, TRY, WYEC, WYEC2, CTZ, and CTMY weather files in PowerDOE and DOE-2 format from: ftp://DOE2.com/Weather There is a directory for each type of file and the file names are usually in the format of CCCCCCSS.bin where CCCCCC is the first six characters of the city name (or some abbreviation) and SS is the two character state code. These files work with PowerDOE and any JJHirsch DOE-2 version or alternate compatible version (from Elite, PRC, ADM, EnergySoft, etc.) These are all on the PowerDOE CD. PowerDOE is a large and complex application; it really helps to take training. A one/two day class can save you much time and agony - email Marlin.Addison@DOE2.com for information on upcoming training events. You can obtain the PowerDOE Quick Start Guide (a 100 page document that provides an overview of the program) and the step-by-step tutorial from the training manual (this will be included with evaluation CD's of the commercial release) by downloading the following file: PD_Intro.exe (Tutorial and Quick Start Guide in PDF format) One last note; there is not yet an "official" PowerDOE support network in place. PowerDOE (or DOE-2.2) resellers are expected to offer support for a fee, but don't expect much of that to be available prior to the commercial product release (no "free" support should be expected for a "free" product). PowerDOE pricing - the "unlimited" software license costs $US278 (Visa and Master card accepted, or cash/check price of $US250) for the right to download/use any version of PowerDOE 1.XX; support is not included and if you would like a CD the pricing listed above applies. We expect you will pay for support (use as well as major software updates) via a "support contract", on a per "issue", or hourly basis. Pricing will be set by individual resellers when the product is commercially available. Some supplier will probably bundle the software and support (and possibly training) together. Good Luck, and have fun! Jeff Hirsch James J. Hirsch & Associates (805) 553-9000 phone (805) 532-2401 fax Jeff.Hirsch@DOE2.com
